Bastian Schweinsteiger is set to be the most high-profile
casualty of Jose Mourinho’sManchester United clear-out this summer.
According to the Sunday Mirror, Germany skipper
Schweinsteiger is facing a battle to save his United career, with new manager
Mourinho closing in on the world record £100million capture of Juventus
midfielder Paul Pogba.
Meanwhile, the Sunday Express claims the former Bayern Munich
star, along with Memphis Depay, Marcos Rojo and possibly Juan Mata – despite
Mourinho’s assurances – will be sold to the highest bidders.
Mourinho has admitted several of his current squad will be
offloaded before the season gets under way next month, and the 31-year-old
former Bayern Munich midfielder is set to head that exodus.
Injury-plagued Schweinsteiger made just 13 league appearances
last season after a £14m move from Bundesliga giants Bayern and has featured
only three times since the turn of the year — his last outing coming as a sub
in the Manchester derby in March.
An ongoing knee issue brought a premature end to his season
and the German – who recently married tennis star Ana Ivanovic – is not due to
return to pre-season training until a week tomorrow after his team got to the
semi-finals of Euro 2016.
That means Schweinsteiger is certain to miss the start of the
season and it is understood Mourinho is willing to let him leave, with the
Special One wanting a more dynamic squad and unwilling to carry players who
cannot stay fit.
Meanwhile, the Sun on Sunday reports United striker Will Keane
is set to join Sunderland with new boss David Moyes lining up a £6.5million
bid.
