TANZANIA Olympic Committee (TOC) yesterday awarded five-year youth, Sheila Adnan and Ahmed Basami after completing 2.5-kilometre race staged in Mtwara region to mark the World Olympic Day.
The two were awarded 50,000/- each and a
set of solar power kit which supports lighting and mobile phone
charging. Similar prizes went to two senior runners who participated and
completed a five kilometre race.
The elders awarded were Hamisi Kayembe
and Zainab Mwanya aged 67 and 60 years old respectively. Mtwara Regional
Commissioner (RC), Halima Dendego who officially flagged two races at
the Nangwanda Sijaona Stadium, presented Ahmed, Sheila, Kayembe and
Mwanya the awards.
She lauded TOC for the decision to give
Mtwara region an opportunity to host the event. Dendego urged the people
of Mtwara to develop the culture of doing exercises as to enable them
to avoid non-communicable diseases and other problems caused by lack of
exercises.
On his side TOC Secretary General,
Filbet Bayi thanked Mtwara’s Regional Commissioner Dendego for
successfully hosting the Olympic Day.
Bayi commended Mtwara’s regional leaders
and its people for responding well to the Olympic Day celebration.
International Olympic Committee (IOC) celebrated its 122nd anniversary
since it was established on June 23, 1894 in Paris, France.
Mtwara Region hosted the day this year
which is also the year that the Olympic Games are taking place. This
year’s games will be held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil from August 5 to 21.
